Wycliffe Membership

After missing several deadlines due to unforeseen circumstances and our membership date being pushed out further than we anticipated, we are so happy to say that as of April 1st, we are members of Wycliffe Bible Translators! (woohoo!)  We are really excited to have the step of membership completed and to be able to begin working on the next phase. We are delighted to have officially been assigned to Papua New Guinea with a potential departure the summer of 2022.

We’re currently working with our PD (partnership development) coach to begin building our Wycliffe ministry prayer and financial team. We will also be working on Wycliffe assignments from now through our Equip training dates. Lord willing, our Equip dates will be scheduled for the next available dates, June 12th – 25th 2021, but we’re currently waiting for those dates to be finalized. As of now, we will be doing the Equip training at Wycliffe headquarters, located in Orlando, Fl, with a possibility of doing the training virtually due to covid limitations.

From June 28th – August 11th we are once again planning to be in Illinois crop dusting for this year’s corn run as Kenneth’s last big job before we start full time with preparing and training for the mission field. We are planning to be in Springfield, (southern) Illinois. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing and getting to spend some time with our friends from IL, even more so with this most likely being our last summer there before we move overseas. We’ll also be having weekly virtual meetings working on our Partnership Development over that time, so we’re expecting our summer to have a very full, but long anticipated schedule.

Our son Benjamin is a healthy and happy four month old bundle of 15lbs. As a friend put it “babies don’t keep” and so we are trying our best to enjoy all of the sweet baby snuggles as much as we can before he gets too big and doesn’t quite enjoy them as much as we do.

As best as we can see our timeline in the future, this is what we expect.

  • Equip training: June 12th-25th, 2021
  • Partnership Development: April 2021 – Dec 2021
  • Intercultural Communications Course in Waxhaw, N.C.: January / February 2022.  (This will help develop our skills and attitudes for living and working effectively in multicultural teams in our Papua New Guinea home-country assignment.)
  • Pre-field Aviation Orientation: Beginning of March 2022 – end of June 2022 (A program in Waxhaw, N.C., designed to equip new maintenance specialists and pilots to function safely and professionally in the field operation to which we are assigned. We will learn to model a corporate operational philosophy, both in maintenance and flight, which can be applied to any aircraft in any operation)

Benjamin Parker & Wycliffe Membership

On December 7th, 9:12am a little 7lb-9oz boy by the name of Benjamin Parker was born! We are very blessed that the birth went very well and both the baby and momma are doing wonderful!

JAARS Technical Evaluation

September 12th, we drove from home (Sarasota, Fl) to JAARS headquarters located in Waxhaw, NC for our Technical Evaluation.

We arrived late Saturday evening and checked into our little apartment on the JAARS center.

The helicopter flying portion of the evaluation began Monday morning and we were able to progress ahead of schedule and completed that by Wednesday. The flying consisted of air-work – climbing turns and completing the turn on x degree heading at x altitude – emergencies – landing and takeoffs in confined areas – slope landings -etc.

The final flying day consisted of a cross country flight simulating a real world mission flight. I was not able to use GPS to navigate to the three locations assigned, but by headings, leg timing and visually looking for landmarks (dead-reckoning and pilotage). I was to figure out how much max fuel we could take, one passenger, pickup cargo and another passenger, then drop off at x location and return to base. Then plans changed at one of the stops for “an emergency medivac” and I needed to re-plan weights, fuel, heading and timing and ETA.

On Thursday the 17th, I began the aircraft mechanic part of the evaluation. I completed projects from electrical troubleshooting – aircraft inspection – sheet metal fabrication – magneto rebuilding and engine running – engine shop – fuel system troubleshooting – and an oral examination. I finished the evaluation on the following Thursday the 24th and then Friday we waited to hear from the JAARS team if we passed the evaluation. They called us Friday evening and we met with the team and they gave us the news that we were accepted into JAARS as a Pilot plus! Which meant we passed the flying evaluation but suggested we pursue aircraft mechanic mentoring with them onsite if we wanted to serve on the field as a mechanic also.

So we started on the next step on September 28th, Wycliffe Bible Translator membership. We were assigned a gentleman to walk us through the membership process of completing work history forms, resumes, and have had several video call interviews. We were originally slated to become Wycliffe members on February 1st, but due to us missing a meeting with SIL/Papua New Guinea the day our little Benjamin Parker was born, the meeting was postponed and due to schedules not suiting for another meeting before the end of December, we missed our membership deadline.

So, what’s next?

On January 18th, we have a video meeting scheduled with SIL/ Paupa New Guinea to complete the official invitation process and determine official roles. The next opportunity for us to become Wycliffe members is on April 1st, 2021. The next step after Wycliffe membership is to begin an online Wycliffe training course lasting about six weeks, and then two weeks of onsite training, “Equip”, at Wycliffe head quarters in Orlando, Fl, on June 12-25, 2021.

Below is the JAARS timeline for an overall picture of the stage we are in. We have finished with the Candidate Stage and are waiting to be accepted as members with Wycliffe before beginning the Pre-field Stage.

JAARS Technical Evaluation

July 10th through August 8th we were based in Sterling, Illinois area for Kenneth’s work. He was spraying corn and soy beans for the business he works for in Florida. Most of the aerial application was in northern Illinois and around Arthur, Illinois area and southern Wisconsin. It was a busy and exhausting time. The days were long, typically 5:30am to 11:30pm. Meghan helped us out with the meals, laundry and odd and ends that needed to be done. We are very thankful to the Heavenly Father for the safety he granted us during the long fatiguing days of the “corn run season”.



This last week we spent time off from work recuperating and relaxing. We spent most of the week with the Gingerich family RV glamping on a lake in Seneca, South Carolina.

This next month, September 14th thorough 26th, Meghan and I are planning to be in Waxhaw, NC to do our technical evaluation with JAARS. The evaluation is a two week process where my aircraft mechanic and pilot skills will be evaluated and where it will be determined on whether or not we will be a good fit for the mission organization. Several months ago we completed the application and got our response from the organization that we were “a fit on paper”.

With Covid-19 schedules and uncertainties that have come with it, we are not sure how the JAARS field training and preparations will progress. We are praying that the JAARS and Wycliffe training schedules, that we need to accomplish from September though end of June 2021, will progress as usual and not be cancelled or postponed. If all this would go “according to our desires, we would be ready to go overseas summer of 2021. If all this, and the prayer and financial support raising we need to raise by beginning of January does not happen, we will not be able to complete an “only once a year pre-field orientation” that happens beginning of March through end of June. Which would then push us back to the following year, summer of 2022 to be ready to go overseas. Please pray with us that God would allow us to be ready to go overseas by summer of 2021. Although this is our desire, we want to be in the Lord’s will and continually commit our lives to the Lord and His timing.

We have some really exciting news! Lord willing, mid December we will have our first child to nourish and care for!

We Are Married!

It’s been almost 6 months since Meghan and I have been married! We had the amazing opportunity to travel to Switzerland for our honeymoon with a couple day trips to France, Germany and Austria. We both thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and culture we were able to experience while there. The beauty and vastness of God’s creation there was breathtaking! We were in Switzerland for a little over 2 weeks and spent our time exploring the cities and countryside, visiting some historical Anabaptist caves and prisons, hiking in the Alps and were able to spend a couple days with two of my helicopter students families I had taught, who are locals to the area. Raoul, being one of them, offered the use of his car for the two weeks we were there, which was such a blessing to have! We were served Raclette by the families that hosted us, which is a traditional Swiss meal that consists of potatoes and melted cheese with many vegetable and seasoning topping options to choose from. It was delicious and their hospitality to us blessed our hearts.

I discontinued my job at Heli Aviation mid March of 2019 and moved in April to Tampico, Illinois for the summer to work for Norman Headings doing annual inspections on three of his helicopters and then crop dusting in July and August. The season was a little shorter this year than average, but I had a great summer working with friends and was glad I had the opportunity to be there and build more helicopter flight time and experience. I then moved back home the end of August, and through a friends recommendation I started a job in Wauchula, Fl. It’s a family business, and my work consists of three parts. Agriculture spraying, maintenance on the helicopters and teaching a commercial student who passed his Commercial Rotorcraft-Helicopter Pilots test beginning of December. I really enjoy my job there!

I attained 1000 hours of helicopter flight time in November, which was a big milestone since that was a JAARS requirement of flight hours before starting the application process with them. We are currently planning to begin an assessment with JAARS in the next months and then officially applying this coming fall. We are expecting the training process to go through at least until the end of June of 2021. We would appreciate prayers as we prepare ourselves for this next big step in our lives. Currently we are living in Myakka City in an apartment on Meghan’s parents property. It is small living quarters but we are very comfortable and it fits us perfectly at this stage of life.

We’re so grateful for the many people, friends and family that have invested, shared and supported us along the way. There are so many times we feel undeserving of all the Lord has blessed us with and we hope and pray that in return we can give all glory to Him who is the giver of all good things.

Moving Home

Yay, PTL! In the past several weeks I have been able to get enough helicopter flight time that got me past the 280hr goal that will allow me to move back home to Sarasota! I am planning to move back to Sarasota on Thursday, August 30th.

About 2 weeks ago, by the grace of God, after 1 month of trying, I was able to finally make contact with the manager at Heli Aviation(a helicopter school, tour & utility business at the Sarasota/Bradenton airport).  After the manager learned that I had an aircraft mechanic certificate along with my helicopter flight instructor certificate and that I lived in Sarasota, they were surprised. They told me it appears like they will lose their current flight instructor soon and their mechanic needs help and it sounds like it could be a great fit! They asked if I could meet with them and so I traveled  home and met with them last Monday, August 20th. The meeting went exceptionally well and the plans are to start working there as a pilot and mechanic, which will allow me to continue to build my helicopter flight time to meet JAARS/ Wycliffe requirements! However, they are requiring  that I add-on two more helicopter ratings (the instrument rating & the flight instructor instrument rating which would then allow me to teach it to their students. I am planning to complete these two ratings with them over the next month). I am super excited and blessed to have this opportunity right at home and I see the powerful hand of God leading and directing all in His perfect timing! What I thought was frustrating of not being able to make contact with the manager for one month was truly a blessing because the managers answer one month ago most likely would have been a “no”!

Wrapping up in Illinois

As I reflect over the past several months, I see the powerful hand of God at work that made many details fall into place that has been allowing this transition in Illinois go exceptionally well.

One of those details being, I have been super blessed to be able to do crop dusting the past several weeks for Norman Headings, it gave me the opportunity to build valuable helicopter flight time. As of today, I have 250 hours of helicopter flight time! Praise the Lord!

Before I can move back to Florida and get a job teaching in helicopters, I need to have a minimum of 280 hours. So as of now, I plan to remain in Illinois until the end of August to be able to acquire the remaining 30 hours. I am actively in contact with a flight school in Clearwater FL about getting a job there to teach, and continue to build my helicopter flight time to meet JAARS requirements. However, this flight school does not have a helicopter job position currently available. But, this Clearwater flight school is offering I can teach in airplanes until a helicopter position opens up allowing me that position. I am also attempting to make contact with another flight school at the Sarasota airport to see if there is an available helicopter job opportunity there.

It was a blessing to have Meghan visit me last week. On July 28th, Meghan and I flew a helicopter to Oshkosh, Wisconsin and was able to visit with JAARS and touch base with the recruiter that I have been in contact with over the past year. We were able to update him on the training progress and get more advice from them. It was a blessing and encouraging time to be able to spend a couple hours with them. The following morning, Sunday, we flew a helicopter to Arthur to be at the Pleasant View church service that Pablo Yoder was speaking at. Two Goals Completed!

When you set goals and make plans to accomplish those goals, I normally go into it with a mindset of it not all going as planned, being flexible, and expect the need to readjust those plans. The past several weeks have gone exceptionally well and better than I hoped for! The Lord has blessed and moved in ways that have once again strengthened my faith in Him and reassured me to continue following where He leads!

By the grace of God, on May 17th I traveled from Tampico, Illinois to Bowling Green, Ohio in the little training helicopter and took and passed the checkride/practical test for the commercial helicopter certificate. I then flew back to Tampico, and began training with Norman Headings to become a flight instructor in helicopters. About half a week later, I flew back to Plymouth, Indiana to a flight school to complete the remaining training. The training went very well and moved along rapidly and we scheduled the checkride/practical test for May 29th. I stayed with relatives in Nappanee, Indiana over the weekend, and on Tuesday the 29th flew over to Toledo, Ohio and completed and passed the flight instructor helicopter checkride/ practical test!

The other day I was flying solo in one of Norman’s largest helicopters transporting it back from an inspection, and I caught myself verbally saying, “what in the world” and in shock of where I am already at with the whole helicopter transition. The Lord has provided so many opportunities and blessings for this to happen!! All glory be to God!!

The commercial helicopter certificate is a requirement to serve with JAARS in the capacity I plan to serve in and I will be using the flight instructor to build my helicopter flight hours to meet those requirements.

So what’s next? Norman Headings owns a business that does aerial agricultural application (crop dusting) with helicopters here in Illinois during the months of July and August. He has graciously started training me to do crop dusting for him this season as a way of allowing me to build hard-to-acquire helicopter flight time. This opportunity to spray for him is not set in stone, but we are making that the goal and trying to make it happen. This would be a huge blessing in multiple ways if this continues to come together!

After spray season in August, Lord willing I will come home and get a job teaching in helicopters to continue to build flight time until I meet JAARS requirements and acquire the helicopter instrument rating. Then…Lord willing, the next step, JAARS!!

Today marks 3 short/long weeks since I’ve been in Tampico, Illinois training with Norman Headings (who owns a helicopter crop dusting business).

The normal day schedule is, we train in the helicopter flying 4 to 6 hours and breaking those hours up into several different flying sessions. Between flights, I normally study for the upcoming helicopter test and do maintenance and repairs on Norman’s helicopters. The days are long, but go by fast. We’ve been able to make great training progress and stay on a fast track schedule. We’ve only had 2 days that we were not able to train due to mechanical issues, and the weather has also been great allowing us to fly everyday, which is a huge blessing!

The morning of May 4th, 11 days after we started training, I did my first solo flight in a helicopter for the first time. Later that evening, I flew the helicopter solo from Tampico to Nappanee, Indiana and landed at my aunt’s house to meet up with Mom and Veronica for the weekend!

We have just scheduled my helicopter commercial checkride (a flying and oral test to get the helicopter certificate) for Thursday the 17th in Bowling Green, Ohio. It’s going to be a very busy next several of days finishing up training and preparing for the checkride test.

One Big Step Completed, Another Step in Motion

In August of 2015, I began the journey of becoming an aircraft mechanic at Harvest Aviation in Wauchula FL. In June of 2016, I moved training locations from Wauchula to Sebring, FL at Carter Aircraft.

In February of 2018, I completed the required aircraft mechanic apprenticeship to be eligible to take the aircraft mechanic general, powerplant and airframe written, oral and practical tests. And as of 5 days ago, April 18 2018, by the grace of God, I hold the aircraft mechanic airframe and powerplant certificate!! I am super grateful and excited to have this completed! This is one big step closer to being able to serve as a missionary pilot-mechanic!

 

In the past several months I have been seeking out if God is leading me to complete helicopter training to be able to also serve in that capacity. I want to thank each one who has prayed about this! God has certainly answered your prayers and made His path clear! In the beginning, I did not know how it would even be possible to financially cover the cost of helicopter training, where to go for the training and many other variables. From not knowing if God’s will was for me to complete this training, I am confident that God is leading me in this! The story,  a gentleman (Norman Headings) messaged me on Facebook saying, “we have the same interests, we should talk”. So we talked that day and God started moving in ways I did not expect! That conversation has led to: as of yesterday, I moved to New Bedford, Illinois and will be here until the end of August of 2018 and will be staying with Norman in his house, I will be using his helicopter to complete the helicopter training and he will be teaching me! Praise God for His clear direction and opening amazing doors for helicopter training!

The Goal

I start helicopter commercial add-on training today in a Robinson-22 helicopter (identical to the helicopter pictured above). Lord willing, this commercial add-on training will be able to be accomplished by June. And right there after, begin the flight instructor helicopter add-on (to be used as a tool to build required helicopter flight hours), and should not take more than 2 weeks to be able to accomplish this.

I plan to stay in Illinois with Norman until end of August building helicopter flight hours, helping maintain Norman’s helicopters and help where I can during their helicopter agriculture spraying season.

This helicopter training will allow me to serve with Wycliffe/JAARS in their helicopters serving remote villages and missionaries in mountainous areas that are not accessible by an airplane.

Making Progress!

Right after passing my commercial pilots license in March, I started training to become a certified flight instructor. I did most of the training in the mornings, over lunch break, and evenings working around the 8am – 5pm aircraft mechanic apprenticeship training.

On August 26th, I had the opportunity to take the certified flight instructor check ride practical test! Passing this test and receiving the certificate is such a blessing to have completed and behind me in the process of becoming a missionary pilot and airplane mechanic!

With this certificate, I am currently part-time using it to teach a student pilot to get his pilot’s certificate. This allows me to teach and build my flight time from 300 hrs to 500 hrs (500 hrs is the minimum requirement to be a missionary pilot with JAARS) without needing to pay for the flight time. Rather, I’m getting paid to build the flight time. So this is a great blessing.

In May, I visited JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Remote Services, which is organizationally under Wycliffe Bible Translators) at their US base in Waxhaw, NC. I was able to discover who and what JAARS is, what part they have in the Bible translation work and what serving with them in the future as pilot /mechanic looks like. At this point in seeking out God’s will, I am feeling led to serve with JAARS in the future when I meet all of their technical and experience requirements.

In the Bible translation work that is going on in the rugged mountainous areas of Papua New Guinea, JAARS has been able to build numerous airstrips in these mountainous remote areas. However, over the years they have mostly gone to the easiest to reach locations (where they could actually build airstrips). Now as time has continued and needing to reach the harder to reach locations where they cannot build airstrips due to the uneven mountainous terrain, they have begun to use more helicopters then they have in the past to be able to reach these villages where they cannot build those airstrips for airplanes, but just a clearing for a helicopter pad.

I have been praying and seeking God about transitioning from airplanes to helicopters to serve in that way. At this point, I do not have a clear direction on whether God is leading me to make the transition to helicopters to serve in that way. The cost of helicopter training is expensive and a harder road to get to the point of experience required to serve with JAARS than it is with airplanes. It would most likely take at least another 2 years from the beginning of the training to getting a job as a helicopter pilot and building my helicopter flight time up to 1,000 hours.  So I ask for your prayers in the next several weeks as “I knock on doors” that God would close and open the doors according to His will.

 

I am very excited that I will be (Lord willing) able to take the airplane Aircraft & Power-plant mechanic test in February 2018, which is only 3 months away! I have been in an apprenticeship for this mechanic license since August of 2015 and it’s almost here!

  2. God has faithfully brought me this far through Aircraft & Power-plant mechanic apprenticeship.
  3. The opportunity to teach a student and build flight time through it.

  1.  That God would have full control of the doors that close and open for helicopter transition training. And that the Holy Spirit would lead me and that I would have complete peace in the decisions to come in the next several weeks.
  2. God’s leading hand through opportunities and grace as I work with the men in the apprenticeship shop.
