Expanding the Reach of the Gospel

The Lord is my Shepherd

Dear friends,

The God and Creator of all things is faithful. Loving. He is almighty. Just. One that has given mankind a choice to make decisions of good or evil. One that gives and takes away on earth. We live in a world where I/we and mankind have chosen to sin against God. And as a result, we face the hardships of life and experience anguish in suffering.

In mid-June, my mom began to decline rapidly. She began losing most of her strength which compounded the effect of her paralysis on the left side of her body. In mid-July, Mom lost all her vision and she began struggling to the degree of swallowing water. On August 10th, 2023 at about 4:00 in the morning, with my dad, my wife, myself, and several other family members at mom’s side, God took Mom, Verda Kaye, home to be with him. Watching Mom’s unwavering faith in her Lord and Saviour over the last year and a half will forever be a testament to us of His love, His grace, and His presence in our walk with Him.

We are thankful for each of you who has supported us on this journey through encouragement, prayers, and physical help in the day-to-day. As much as we want Mom back, we are thankful for the freedom from her suffering and the hope of eternity with her in Heaven.

Our future steps…..

We have taken a step back since Mom’s passing and are focusing on our family. The past couple of years have been a busy and trying time for our young family. As much as we desire and have the burden of wanting to come to a plan of action for the next several years, we realize we are in a grieving time and a wilderness journey. We long for God to clearly show us a path that would honor and glorify Him in His timing.

After several years of talks with land developers, my parent’s house is under contract to sell in the fall of 2024. So Dad is planning to move from the house that he and Mom lived in for the past thirty years. It will be a bittersweet move for him and us children with all of our childhood memories of Mom being at this house. So we plan to stay in the home area until the end of 2024 with my dad and youngest brother Ryan and help with packing, selling, and moving things to a new home in the area.

We would greatly appreciate your prayers and feedback as we continue to seek the Lord’s leading in our lives. May God bless you all with His presence this Christmas season.

He is Faithful

Dear friends,

We wanted to give you an update on the journey we are on with serving with Wycliffe & JAARS in Papua New Guinea. Over the past year, we have been helping support and care for my mom who has a cancerous brain tumor and paralysis.

The last MRI on my mother’s brain tumor was on January 23rd, and we were amazed to see a change for the better! PTL! All previous MRIs over the past year were consistent with tumor growth. But the last MRI showed that the tumor had ceased growth and the swelling in the brain significantly decreased resulting in the midline shift moving back closer to normal! Mom’s headaches and nausea have improved substantially in comparison with July of 2022. We are so thankful and blessed for this!

We have been on a leave of absence with Wycliffe since June 2022 so we could support and care for mom during this time. As time has gone, we have realized that the support and care for mom may be needed for a longer period. So that has brought us to a decision point of continuing the leave of absence with Wycliffe or resigning. After much prayer and seeking counsel from Wycliffe and others, we have decided that it is best to resign from Wycliffe for the time being and come back to serve with Wycliffe & JAARS in Papua New Guinea when God opens that door again. This has been a difficult decision for us but the good Father has been faithful. We realize that God’s ways are higher than our ways and we want to daily open our hands and be completely surrendered to Him. In God’s timing, we do hope to come back to Wycliffe & JAARS to serve in Papua New Guinea.

We are blessed to have your prayers and interest in our lives! We will continue to send newsletters on a regular basis.

Praises:

· The signs of improvement in mom’s health.
· The sweet peace from God in the recent decisions made.

Prayer Requests:

· Healing and restoration for Verda.
· A job for Kenneth that gives him the flexibility to help care for Verda as needed.
· Wisdom in short and long-term decisions.
· Grace for the adjustments we are going through.

Joyful in Hope

Dear Friends,

Thanks to each of you for your prayers, notes of encouragement, and financial partnership. We are so grateful to have you all as a team behind us. It has been such a big blessing in our lives to have your support!

We are thankful to have finished the last of the radiation treatments for mom and have recently helped move my parents from Mexico back home to Florida. We have received recent MRI scan results, however, due to needing more time for radiation to be active, we do not yet know how well the treatments have worked.

There have been many lifestyle changes for mom with her paralysis on her left side. We are so thankful for our church family back home and the many hours they have put in to clean the house, install a walk in shower and ramp to the front door to make it easier to care for mom once we arrived back home!

Our current plan is to continue putting our JAARS orientation on hold as we help care for them over the next several months. We have been approved by Wycliffe to take an official leave of absence for the next several months. We do not know what the future holds, but we desire to daily commit our lives to the sovereign, all-knowing God who has the best plans for us.

Please continue to pray for mom’s healing, strength and endurance over the next couple of months. And for wisdom and God’s clear leading hand as we navigate the future. We are so thankful for you all.

Praises:

· For safe and smooth travels back home
· The support of family and church family when we arrived home
· For God’s continued hand of guidance

Prayer Requests:

· Healing and restoration for Verda
· Wisdom for the future
· Physical and emotional strength

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path

Through the past almost two months now, leaning on God’s word for guidance as well as many prayers lifted to Him, has become such a precious and peace giving part of this stage of our lives. We are so thankful for the input, prayers, and encouragement we have received from all of you!

For how much we want to be at JAARS right now in the Prefield Aviation Orientation class, we do know that being with Kenneth’s parents (Joe and Verda) is where the good Father has us. Verda’s tumor surgery was almost six weeks ago and she has had little to no movement in her left side. We have been helping care for her in the many ways that have limited her as well.

Waiting for radiation treatment

Verda’s chemo and radiation treatment began on April 11th and tentatively will go through May 31st. Our current plan is to stay in Mexico, caring for Kenneth’s parents while she goes through her treatments. Although our plans have changed, so much more importantly God’s plans have not and we are thankful to be here and have the opportunity to care for them.

Some of the current daily routines are preparing food, washing clothes, going to doctor checkups, assisting Verda with walking during physical therapy, physically moving and carrying her around from place to place, and showering and dressing her. Kenneth goes with Verda and Joe to radiation treatment Monday through Friday and helps transport and move mom into the radiation bed.

A couple of weekends ago, we were able to take Verda out for the afternoon/evening for a little bit of grocery shopping and then out to eat at a restaurant. As she put it, it was refreshing to get out for a bit and “do something normal” for the first time since surgery.

Please pray for wisdom and God’s clear leading hand as we navigate the weeks ahead.

Exciting news!
We are so excited about the blessing of expecting a little baby girl this coming July!

Praises:

· For a safe surgery.
· For the blessing of being able to care for Kenneth’s parents.
· For the blessing of a healthy girl on the way!

Prayer Requests:

· Healing and restoration for Verda.
· That Verda will continue to have a good and mild reaction to the chemo and radiation treatments.
· Verda’s left side body movement would be restored.
· Wisdom for the future.
· Physical and emotional strength.

Prayer For Mom

Dear Friends,
So much has happened in the last two weeks and we desire your prayers. On the afternoon of Monday, February, 21st we discovered over a phone call with my sister that my mom, Verda, had developed symptoms that were resembling a stroke that was affecting her left side body movements. So we encouraged that my mom would be taken to the emergency room. Once the hospital ran a CT scan, a doctor came in at 3:00 AM and told them that mom had a mass on the front right side of her brain.

Once we found this out Tuesday morning, we packed up and left JAARS, ICC, two days early and headed for home to support mom and be with the family. We are so thankful for the flexibility of the ICC team for allowing us to complete ICC with leaving a couple of days early. The remaining family was able to travel and be together over the weekend while we waited for the doctor appointments the following week. The next week, we met with two local doctors. Our consultation with the neurosurgeon said the tumor is almost 6cm in length and about 4cm in width. So that evening we discussed as a family what we thought the next steps should be. With many prayers and an encouraging reference of a clinic in Mexico from Eddie (a friend of a friend) who had been through the battle of a brain tumor as well, we had peace as we made this the next step of going to the Mexico clinic. We packed up and departed Florida Thursday, March 3rd to accompany my parents, Eddie, and Rita (a friend of the family) on the trip to the clinic in Mexico. We are so thankful to Eddie for graciously offering to accompany us all and show us around and help the trip run smoothly.

Appointment with Dr. Adan Contreras the head doctor of the clinic we are at in Mexico

Since we have been here, the doctors have done another MRI and several physical exams and the tumor has grown about 8% (1cm) since her last MRI eleven days ago. With the urgency of removing the tumor and relieving the pressure in mom’s brain, the doctors had scheduled surgery for this past Wednesday, March 9th to remove as much of the tumor as possible. But Sunday morning she had swelling in her left leg, and after doing an ultrasound, discovered there was a large blood clot that was the cause of it. They surgically removed that Tuesday, March 8th as well as inserted a screen to protect her body from clots moving up to her heart, lungs, etc. Surgery for the brain tumor was postponed until mom could recover from the blood clot surgery. Although this was a setback for mom, we are praising God that the blood clot was discovered and removed due to the major complications that could have been caused during the brain tumor surgery. Yesterday we learned that the brain tumor is scheduled to take place tomorrow March, 12th.

Mom, Dad & Kenneth before mom checked in hospital for blood clot surgery.

So as we face the next days and weeks ahead, we request your prayers for guidance and wisdom in the many decisions we face. My parents and family feel that the Lord has led them here and we are so thankful to all of our friends, family, and prayer warriors for their support. It means more to us than we can express. Please continue to keep us in your prayers, we need them greatly!

The Prefield Aviation Orientation team has been gracious to us during this time. We are thankful they have allowed Kenneth to still participate in classes as much as possible on zoom, until we can travel back to JAARS.

Prefield Aviation Orientation Classes on Zoom

Praises:

· For safe travels from NC to FL, then from FL to Mexico, especially for mom.
· For mom not having worse symptoms for a tumor of that size.
· For the friends and family that have gathered around and supported us during this time.

Prayer Requests:

· Wisdom for the doctors as they discern the best steps for mom to take
· The tumor surgery can be scheduled ASAP
· The Lord would protect mom from danger during the surgery

(Update) Dear Prayer Warriors

Hello dear friends and prayer warriors,

By Saturday evening, before ICC classes (Intercultural Communications Class) began on Monday morning, both Meghan and Kenneth, received the PCR Covid tests back as negative! Praise the Lord! Thank you for praying on our behalf!
That night we were cleared to arrive at JAARS as soon as we desired. So after some discussion and revaluating, we decided to leave early the next morning for North Carolina. We had a good day of travel and arrived at JAARS and were able to get settled into our apartment on the JAARS campus by Sunday evening.

The apartment complex on the JAARS campus we are living in through June

With Kenneth still having a sore throat, we both did classes Monday morning in our apartment on Zoom. The aggravated sore throat came and went intermittently the entire week that kept us concerned and out of in-person class. This week with the sore throat still not being gone, I got tested for strep and mono, which both came back negative, interestingly enough with symptoms related to that. So with all negative test results for Covid, strep, and mono, it is good to be in class in person this week!

Meghan working on classwork

Meghan’s sister, Kristen, traveled with us and we are very thankful to have her here caring for Benjamin while we are in ICC classes.

Benjamin is learning what 35° feels like

Praises:

· Praise the Lord for negative Covid tests!
· Praise the Lord that we were able to make the drive from Florida to North Carolina before ICC classes began!
· Praise the Lord both Meghan and Kenneth are in class in person!

Dear Prayer Warriors

Hello dear friends and prayer warriors,

Two weeks ago we were informed that our ICC class (Intercultural Communications Class) delayed the start by five days due to ICC staff having COVID.  At present, classes will begin on Monday, January 31st.
This past week our family has been fighting a sickness. Although we are thankful to currently be feeling better, we are not completely past the sickness yet. We have been asked to get COVID PCR tests before class on Monday, which we completed yesterday, Friday morning. We are currently waiting for our PCR test results which we should know by Sunday evening. We were asked to not arrive at JAARS until we are cleared for in-person classes since we have not been feeling the best this past week. We are thankful the JAARS staff has given us an option to do ICC classes virtually via Zoom video until we can arrive at JAARS COVID free! We hope to depart for JAARS in North Carolina next week, Lord willing.

We value your prayers and interest! We plan to update you as we are cleared and make the move from Florida up to North Carolina.

Prayer Requests:

· Please pray that we can adjust well and have wisdom for the day-by-day changes and decisions.
· Please pray that our COVID PCR tests come back negative.
· Please pray that we can adapt to the virtual way of doing classes and be able to connect well with the other in-person students.
· Please pray that as we are cleared to arrive at JAARS in person, the travel day from Florida to North Carolina will suit around classes.

Praises:

· Praise the Lord that we can rest and have peace that our omnipotent Father is in control!

And on a more cheerful note, below is a video of 13-month-old Benjamin Parker enjoying corn on the cob and cows!

Moving to North Carolina

Our little Benjamin Parker turned ONE year old this month! We had a little birthday party for him with family and friends and were blessed with a beautiful evening outside to get to spend time with those that came.

We were blessed to spend the week of Thanksgiving in Indiana with Kenneth’s family. Benjamin wasn’t sure at first how to act around four energetic boys, but he had the best time figuring it out! And we even got to see a few fall leaves and snow while we were there!

This is our last full month at home before heading to JAARS in Waxhaw, NC. We are excited that the last stretch is finally here! We will both be taking an Intercultural Communications Course (ICC) from January 26th – February 25th. This four-week course will give us the opportunities to deepen our personal relationship with the Lord, further interpersonal and team building skills, interact with experienced missionaries, understand differing worldviews, acquire tools for multicultural, multigenerational team ministry, language learning, and conflict resolution.

Kenneth will then be in his Aviation Pre-field Orientation, March 2nd – June 24th. Since both of these courses will take place at JAARS, we will be moving and living there for about 5 months!

JAARS Center in Waxhaw, North Carolina
where we will be doing the classes and aviation orientation.

In October we were able to watch “Ends of the Earth” a mission aviation documentary with true stories of MAF missionary pilots — past and present — who strive with missionaries and local believers to take the gospel to the most remote places on earth. The film was based in Papua New Guinea close to where we will be located. We really enjoyed getting to see the film and were reminded again of how easily we take for granted the blessing of having God’s word and of the many people, like a Nukna man recently experienced in Papua New Guinea, who did not have a Bible in their own language yet.
(If you would like to watch the film, link here https://watch.endsoftheearthmovie.com/ )

The Apostle Paul Speaks Nukna.
Recently some of the Nukna people were reading through the translation of Colossians with Matt Taylor, checking for accuracy and naturalness. After one particular passage, Matt noticed one of the Nukna men smiling and chuckling to himself. When Matt asked what was going on, he replied, “It’s just that for a minute there I forgot it was a translation. It’s like Paul knows the Nukna language and is speaking directly to me!” Moments like these greatly encourage us to persevere in the task God has given us, to partner with the Nukna to translate the good news of Jesus into a language and format they clearly understand. It’s a long and complicated process, and there are no shortcuts to achieving a high-quality translation that speaks to the hearts of the Nukna while also remaining faithful to the original text.

Story and photo by Matt Taylor

The gift this Nukna man has of reading the scripture in his own language is great! But now he also has the opportunity to learn that he has such a greater and ultimate gift of salvation through the Savior Lord Jesus Christ!

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10

May your hearts be full and blessed by the most precious Christmas gift.
Kenneth, Meghan, and Benjamin Parker Gingerich

Almost a full ministry budget!

It has been a busy almost three months since our last newsletter! We had an enjoyable and busy time during the corn run in Iowa this July and August! We were happy to be able to stay in a four bedroom, one bathroom AirBnb, along with the three others that Kenneth was working with. The living quarters were a little tight at times, but we were with a great group of guys and we really enjoyed the time we were able to spend with them. I was able to make the evening meals, so between that and caring for Benjamin, we stayed pretty busy at the house as well!

We arrived back home in mid-August for about a week. With our family beginning the transition from working full time, Kenneth needed to return the lease helicopter back to Utah for his boss. So on the 18th, Kenneth, Benjamin, and I began the 18-hour flight from Florida to Salt Lake City, Utah.

We stopped the first night in Georgia at Kenneth’s boss’ farm, then the second day flew from Georgia to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the last stretch on the third day from New Mexico to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a long flight, but the weather held up nicely. The scenery was gorgeous and Benjamin did so well and was such a sweet trooper the whole time!

9 fuel stops – 1,850 miles – 18 hours of flight

Then from Utah, we flew to Denver, Colorado, picked up our car rental, and made our way to Yellowstone where we got to spend several days exploring the park, hiking, camping in the rental SUV, and enjoying all the beautiful views. We then drove to Washington for Kenneth’s brother, Jason’s wedding and spent the weekend in Washington for their wedding.

Lastly, we took an airline to Indiana to spend the week with some of Kenneth’s family and were able to share our Wycliffe presentation at his sister’s church on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, we once again packed up and drove to a close friend of ours in Arthur, Illinois, and we were able to share the presentation that evening at their church. We’ve been so blessed by those who have come along side us in helping us make connections, and taking an interest in the those who do not have access to scripture! We really enjoyed sharing God’s call in our lives to Papua New Guinea, connecting with individuals, and being a voice for those in isolated locations that are deprived of God’s Word (that we as Americans have been so richly blessed with for hundreds of years).

Presentation at Fair Haven Church

The following Monday, we made our way back home to the sunny south! We had a great time traveling and enjoyed our time with family and friends. We’ve been so blessed by the hospitality and generosity of those around us!

In three weeks, our Heavenly Father took us from 39% to our Wycliffe ministry budget being nearly fully funded! We are so close to being at our goal! To this, we are so very thankful to our Lord and grateful to those who have joined and linked arms with our Wycliffe ministry as we go to Papua New Guinea! We are so excited to be at this point! Wahoo!

So what’s the next step after we reach 100%? Lord willing, this fall, we will be working on getting our visas, Benjamin’s passport, and packing and selling what we can at this point. We have a couple more training requirements before we leave for Papua New Guinea. First is Intercultural Communications Course (ICC) from January 26th – February 25th. Second is Aviation Pre-field Orientation, March 2nd – June 24th. Both of these courses will take place at JAARS headquarters in Waxhaw, North Carolina. Third and most likely to take place around the end of July, Kenneth will need to do a one-week training course for the specific model helicopter he’ll be flying in PNG, the Bell Longranger L3.

Our current stage is, “Focus on Developing Partnerships”

Completion of Wycliffe Bible Translators Equip Training!

We have now completed our online Wycliffe Bible Translators Equip training as of June 24th! Our classes consisted of two weeks of virtual training mid-June with a total of 30 participants, from the comfort of our couch.

We learned so much and had a lot of fun interacting with the other new members and staff, learning more about Wycliffe, how to thrive in a foreign country with diverse cultures, trying out new ethnic foods together and building relationships that we hope will last for a lifetime. It was also a bit stretching at times as we were pushed out of our comfort zones, but we are thankful for the growth that, that brings! As well as thankful for the wonderful and friendly crew members that made everyone feel right at home through it all!

Benjamin had the best time spending the two weeks we were in training with his grandmas and aunties and we were so thankful for the wonderful care they gave him.

July 7th, we packed up and drove from Florida to Oklahoma. Lord willing, we will be making the move up to west Iowa by July 13th, where we will be based at. We plan to be there until the second week of August. We would appreciate your prayers for nights of good rest and safety for Kenneth as he is flying and working through the long days and short nights of spray season.

After spray season we have a short week of being home then plan to be in Washington, for Kenneth’s brother’s wedding. We are hoping while we are in the northwest, to be able to do some hiking and sightseeing as well, but are waiting to see what time and work allow.

We are excited to be in the process of prayer and financial partnership and how our Heavenly Father is providing through others joining us in our Wycliffe ministry financially! We are currently at 35% of our Wycliffe budget! Sometimes it feels like we have a mountain to climb to be at 100% of our faith goal of December 2021, but we know that He will show Himself faithful and strong to meet the needs if that is His will.
